We see the magnificent potential in vacant heritage properties. We see how this can be fulfilled with the right implementation. And we are the right people to discover what that implementation is. We use our extensive reserves of knowledge to cut through the tangle of regulations, agencies and architectural challenges.

Pieter Verfaillie

Architect

The projects that Pieter found the most fulfilling in the course of his career as an architect were those involving new destinations. He built up plenty of experience renovating and restoring old properties such as schools, former swimming pools and military sites. Now he runs his own architectural firm, bow, specialising in new destinations for old commercial properties and abandoned urban lots.
Pieter Pieter
“I first approach things from a planning point of view. For each new project, I consider the surroundings, the functionalities and requirements and what is needed. You have to hold firmly to the building’s intended destination; who is the future user?”

Rebecca Vanysacker

Heritage research and monument preservation

After completing her architectural studies, Rebecca took a master's degree in heritage with a view to specialising in historic buildings. She subsequently commenced work as a restoration architect and went on to accrue a wealth of knowledge on historical sites and buildings. You can contact Rebecca for advice and guidance on historic sites and buildings, in addition to heritage research projects.

Rebecca Rebecca
“Historic buildings are messengers from the past. They lay bare the local history and determine the identity of their immediate surroundings. Repurposing ensures that their message is passed on to future generations.”

Ruben Willaert

Prospects and restoration

Ruben Willaert co-founded our Herbé Research Agency in 2020. It specialises in repurposing complex heritage sites that we believe warrant a new lease of life. Ruben has since handed over the reins to Pieter Verfaillie, and is now able to concentrate fully on the sustainable revitalisation, revaluation and repurposing of these heritage projects. Our heritage expertise remains assured, nonetheless, via a close collaboration with Rebecca Vanysacker. This partnership has allowed us to build on Herbé’s impeccable DNA and deliver a unique range of solutions for those heritage projects that present a challenge within the confines of contemporary society.

Ruben Ruben
“Herbé aims to brighten up dark spots in our environment and give them a purpose once more. Heritage buildings have proven their worth over hundreds of years, and they just keep getting lovelier. They embody our history and deserve our care.”
